The Four Chronotypes

Sleep researcher Dr. Michael Breus identified four chronotypes based on circadian rhythm patterns. Understanding yours can help optimize your schedule.

Lion (15-20% of population)

Early risers who wake before dawn full of energy. Most productive in the morning. Should sleep 10pm-6am. Often CEOs and high achievers.

Bear (50% of population)

Solar sleepers who follow the sun. Wake easily at sunrise, get tired after dark. Most productive mid-morning. Should sleep 11pm-7am. The default chronotype.

Wolf (15-20% of population)

Night owls who come alive after dark. Struggle with early mornings. Most creative and productive after 4pm. Should sleep 12am-7:30am. Common in creative fields.

Dolphin (10% of population)

Light, anxious sleepers. Often struggle with insomnia. Alert throughout the day but never feel fully rested. Need strict sleep hygiene. Should sleep 11:30pm-6:30am.

๐Ÿฆ‰ Important: You cannot change your chronotype - it's genetic. But you can work with it instead of against it for better energy and sleep.

Working With Your Chronotype

Schedule demanding work during your peak hours. If you're a Wolf forced into a 9-5, use light therapy and strategic caffeine to shift your rhythm slightly earlier.
